The Regex Tester uses your browser's native JavaScript regular expression engine (ECMAScript specification). Regular expression behaviour varies between engines and programming languages. A pattern that matches correctly in this tool may behave differently in PCRE (PHP, R), Python's re module, .NET's System.Text.RegularExpressions, Java's java.util.regex, Go's regexp package, or other implementations.
Specific differences include but are not limited to: lookbehind support and length restrictions, Unicode property escapes, possessive quantifiers, atomic groups, recursive patterns, and named capture group syntax.
The "Plain-English Explanation" feature provides a simplified, human-readable interpretation of regex tokens. This explanation is generated algorithmically and may not capture every nuance of complex patterns, particularly those involving backreferences, conditional patterns, or interactions between multiple quantifiers. The explanation is intended as an educational aid, not as an authoritative specification of the pattern's behaviour.
Do not rely solely on this tool for regex validation in safety-critical, financial, medical, or legal applications. Always test patterns against comprehensive test suites in the target language and engine before deploying to production.
Certain regex patterns can cause exponential backtracking in the JavaScript engine, potentially freezing your browser tab. devmeldex does not implement a timeout mechanism for regex execution. If your browser becomes unresponsive while testing a pattern, close the tab and revise the pattern to avoid nested quantifiers.
The Diff Checker tool provides character-level text comparison using the diff-match-patch algorithm. While highly reliable for most text comparison use cases, it is not certified for legal document comparison in the manner of purpose-built legal technology tools (e.g., Litera, Workshare). Solicitors, barristers, and attorneys should not rely solely on this tool for contractual, regulatory, or litigation-related document comparison where completeness and accuracy are legally mandated.
The Image Resizer uses the HTML5 Canvas API for image processing. Resized images may exhibit quality differences compared to professional image editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP) due to differences in interpolation algorithms and colour management. EXIF metadata (camera settings, GPS coordinates, orientation) is not preserved during Canvas API processing. This tool is not suitable for professional print-production workflows where colour accuracy and metadata preservation are required.
